Kerry Stunned Over Taser Incident

He may affect surprise, but he will not second-guess the tactics of the police. I see no gray area in this matter. There was absolutely no justification for using a taser gun on this young man, no matter what kind of practical jokester or troublemaker he may be. He is not a criminal, and even if his actions were criminal, this would be a clearcut case of cruel and unusual punishment. This story is from the CBS News Politico blog

(The Politico) Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) said he still doesn’t know why police Tasered a University of Florida student during the senator’s speech Monday, saying, “I could have handled the situation without interruption.”

Kerry, however, was quick not to undermine the police decision to use force.

“I don’t know what transpired,” Kerry said. “The police must have had a reason to make their decision.”

The senator would not comment as to whether the police used an appropriate level of force, saying, “That is a law enforcement issue.”

Kerry was speaking at the University of Florida, when Andrew Meyer, a student, burst into the room and ran towards a microphone, attempting to ask Kerry a question. According to university officials, Meyer was allowed to ask several questions before his microphone was cut off and university police stepped in.

Kerry said he never felt threatened by Meyer, saying he tried to quiet the crowd and asked police to allow Meyer to ask his question.

Yeah, the police had a reason. It is called police brutality. The student was asking about impeaching Bush. That was enough to set off police overreaction. Free speech in this country used to be a proud tradition, but has become a sick joke. This reaction from Kerry is typical moderate evasiveness. His respect for law enforcement evidently trumps his respect for freedom of speech. Police are out of control! That is not news! If Democrats of his stature will not denounce obvious police brutality, what good is that party?
