Women’s Equality Amendment Missing Sponsors

The Feminist Majority sent out a mailer about the Women’s Equality Amendment, listing its sponsors as of July. I noticed two prominent politicians missing, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi. I am not surprised about Reid particularly, but what is up with Pelosi? According to equalrightsamendment.org, there are 200 House sponsors and 25 Senate sponsors. I found another listing at sourcewatch.org of the sponsors as of April, and Pelosi is listed there among 173 House sponsors! Did she change her mind? What is up with this woman, Democratic Speaker of the House, not supporting this? A large majority of Democratic members of the House are on board, along with a few Republicans, but she is not?

I doubt Nancy Pelosi will vote against this amendment, or that her reasons for not sponsoring it are at all similar to my own misgivings. I think the ERA is important, but in the context of the Bill of Missing Rights, it is only a step in the right direction. I would not expect more from Congress as presently constituted, but I do expect Nancy Pelosi to support the ERA!

Here’s the full list of cosponsors:

Pelosi’s not on it, but she’s not on the withdrawn list, either, so I have no idea.

If that link doesn’t work, you can go here http://thomas.loc.gov/bss/110search.html and search H.J. Res. 40.

Thanks, Melissa. I think the sourcewatch listing is questionable, since the link you found shows 194 sponsors already on board in March, though three of those withdrew.
